Evie (left) is our youngest volunteer! This mother-daughter dynamic duo makes a weekly appearance at BTP to expertly fullfill requests! What got you interested in BTP to begin with, or what made you start volunteering? Does it tie in to the rest of your life in any meaningful way? Kate: I was looking for a volunteer opportunity for my daughter, Evie, and I to do together. I wanted to instill the importance of volunteering and giving back to your community. After a lot of r

Letter from Birmingham Jail
January 19th marks the birthday of one of America’s most celebrated Civil Rights activists. As we take this day to honor the work done by Martin Luther King Jr., it is essential that we continue to question and investigate the racial injustices that plague the institutions and culture of this country. While incarcerated for his role in nonviolent resistance, Dr. King authored a letter from Birmingham Jail in Alabama that would become a notorious message of struggle and resist

Kim Raymoure March 1977 - December 2o25
Kim began volunteering with us in 2019, following our successful campaign to overturn the Washington State Department of Corrections' decision that April to ban donated books. She came in regularly during the first eight months of COVID to get what requests we were able to fulfill during that lean time ready for mailing. She was on our board for less than two years, but her influence on BtP continues to this day. She showed us that bookstore customers would buy and donate new

$95,000 awarded to 17 prison book programs around the US
Fund named for Bellingham literacy activist, Nancy Duncan Huss Books to Prisoners, which has been sending free books to prisoners since 1973, was approached this year by a donor whose stated interest was serving as many people as possible. The donor was thinking big, bigger than BTP alone could manage at short notice. What BTP COULD do was recruit others to this worthy cause. "BtP organizers recognize that, over the short term, leveraging other groups' capacities is an effect

They also maintain an online wish list of books we need year-round. Rosa Hernandez talks about building community, one book at a time. How did you begin working with Books to Prisoners? Share Your Love of Reading with the Gift of Postage
In 2025, we've spent almost $6500 a month to ship 35,000 pounds of books to 10,823 readers behind bars. That's a lot of stories told, skills learned, and wisdom gained. This GivingTuesday, December 2nd, we're asking you for a total donation of $10,000. That's enough to cover our postage through mid-January. You'll be sharing your love of reading with strangers. Some of them will become avid readers themselves. What better gift could you give for the holidays?

Meet Caitlyn, Featured Volunteer for December 2025
What got you interested in BTP to begin with, or what made you start volunteering? Does it tie in to the rest of your life in any meaningful way? Over the summer, I decided I wanted to volunteer at local libraries and began combing the internet for opportunities. This led to the discovery of the Books to Prisoners website. The mission statement deeply resonated with me and I immediately reached out to contribute. I would not be the person I am today without books. They are in

Perfect Package Weight
There is no weight maximum for packages, but a good guideline is that the average package will be a 2-pounder; some packages will be 1-pounders, some will be 3+ pounders. Two books being weighed on a scale. The red pointer aligns with a black line drawn at 1 pound 14 ounces. All of the lines drawn on the dial are two ounces short of the shipping weight, to allow for the weight of the wrapping material.
