Pen Pal Programs

Black and Pink: Black & Pink is an open family of LGBTQ prisoners and “free world” allies who support each other. B&P offers a free monthly newspaper as well as a robust pen-pal program that matches LGBTQ people who are incarcerated with their peers on the outside.

CellPals!: A general-purpose internet-based prison pen pal organization.

​

Prison Pen Pals: A site begun by people originally working with Books Behind Bars, Prison Pen Pals seeks to find pen pals for prisoners. They also list prison libraries to which you can send magazines and other reading materials.

Other Organizations

Justice Arts Coalition: The Justice Arts Coalition (JAC) unites teaching artists, arts advocates, incarcerated artists and their loved ones in an effort to build and support a common agenda and provide a unique voice in public dialogue around the intersection of the arts and justice.

University Beyond Bars: University Beyond Bars empowers prisoners to fulfill their potential through communities of higher learning that transcend prison walls.

​

Free Bird Publishers: We provide inmate services, prisoner publications, education for inmates, prisoner services, and other products for the incarcerated. We also offer self-publishing services to inmates and their loved ones.

​

Prison Talk Online: A site with extensive online discussion groups for families of prisoners and prisoners including topics on sentencing, prison system news, state-by-state information, legal help, phone charges, health and medical information, employment, and emotional support.

​

American Prison Writing Archive: The mission of the APWA is to override preexisting notions of prisons and incarcerated people, with first-person accounts by those who live and work in the criminal justice system.
