Books to Prisoners is doing vital work, investing in the intellectual, moral, and creative growth of people who deserve access to great literature (and great writing of all kinds), but who are increasingly deprived of it. Thanks to Books to Prisoners for fighting to retain and expand this fundamental right.

— Sarah Stillman, staff writer at The New Yorker and winner of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize.

Volunteer

Every week, we receive hundreds of letters from people in prisons around the country requesting books. With your help, we can get books into their hands.

Volunteers read letters from incarcerated individuals, match book requests with our library, and package books for mailing.

Shifts are available weekly and no experience is required. Individuals and small groups are welcome.

Volunteer Shifts

Tuesdays - 4-8pm

Wednesdays - 9:30am-1:30pm*, 4-8pm

Thursdays - 4-8pm

Sundays - 1-4pm**

*Wednesday morning shifts are drop in, no need to sign up first.

** Sunday afternoon shifts are mask required, so those with compromised immune systems can volunteer with fewer worries. Disposable masks available upon request.

To get involved:

1. Email us at bookstoprisoners@live.com to let us know you're interested.

2. Attend a new volunteer orientation where you'll learn how to fill requests.

3. Once you're oriented you can volunteer during open hours as often as you want.
