Volunteering with Us

Thanks to everybody for their interest over the last few months! We are beginning to emerge from our COVID restrictions, and are once again accepting new volunteers – although shifts are still operating at a fixed capacity, so opportunities may be limited.

If you would like to volunteer with us, please email us at bookstoprisoners@live.com for onboarding. (And for those checking back after multiple months – a special thanks for your persistence!)

For our current volunteers: Please do not attend any of our regular shifts unless you have been fully vaccinated, plus two weeks for the vaccine to take effect. We are also requiring that folk sign up in advance for shifts. If you’re not already on our announcement list, email us at bookstoprisoners@live.com to be added so you can access the weekly signup sheet.

As a non-profit 501(c)(3) with only one part-time paid staff member, the majority of our work is done through volunteer labor. As a volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to read book requests from incarcerated individuals and comb through our library of books to find the perfect fit.

We welcome individuals, students, court-ordered community service volunteers, and small groups. (We are eligible for hours-matching with employers!) Volunteers with previous experience in a library setting or who are avid readers are best prepared to help choose books from our library, but we welcome all who love to learn and are passionate about human rights!

Where are you located? When can I volunteer?

Our volunteer space is located in Greenwood, near bus routes 5 and 45! For the precise address, as well as other important information, please contact us directly.

We are a drop-in volunteer organization. To get started volunteering, you must first attend an orientation – once you have completed an orientation, you may come to any one of our open volunteer hours in whatever way fits with your schedule.

Orientations take place at 5:30 pm, every Tuesday and Thursday, but you MUST email us before showing up. If you show up for the first time without contacting us first, you may be turned away.

Hours

Tuesday: 4 -8 pm
Wednesday: 9:30 am – 1:30 pm, 4 - 8 pm (masks required during evening shift.)
