As most of you are already aware, Books to Prisoners has to move from our home of 10 years, University Christian Church. We are happy to announce, however, that we have a new home: Crown Hill United Methodist Church! We will begin moving our library of books and constructing new shelving at our new space in the coming weeks, but transferring our operations to another location is likely to take a while.
What does this mean for BTP? Firstly, effective immediately and through December, we will not be answering letters from prisoners. We hope to start up operations again by the beginning of January, but that will depend largely on how much support we get while moving. This also means that if you come in during our normal volunteer hours, you won’t be able to do a lot of our normal volunteer activities, and if you come for a volunteer orientation, you’ll likely be put to work packing up books! The volunteer activities that we currently have available are: wrapping up books to mail out, packing books in boxes, organizing our office supplies, and helping us find tools/cars/people resources for moving days. On weekend work party days (see below), we will also be dismantling shelving, moving things to our new space, constructing new shelving, and unpacking books.
I want to help – what can I do? Well, first of all, there are a fair amount of things we need to help us move. If you are able to donate/lend us any of the following resources, please reach out to bookstoprisoners@live.com.
Electric drills
Impact drivers
Electric screwdrivers
Hammers
1″ and 2″ wood screws
Hand trucks/dolleys
Boxes
People with cars/trucks/vans who want to help us move!
Carpenters/people with carpentry skills (mostly for assembling shelving)
When are you moving and can I help you move? YES! We would love your help at any of our upcoming work parties. Feel free to drop in, or sign up for a shift (and let us know what tools you can bring)! Our work parties will be on the following dates:
Sunday, October 7th 12 pm – 5 pm Dismantling shelving + moving raw materials to new location
Sunday, October 28th 12 pm – 5 pm Constructing shelving at new location
