Petition for Ear Hustle Producer

Ear Hustle is an award winning podcast produced inside of San Quentin, a California state prison, that details the daily experiences of life in prison. In February 2026, Books to Prisoners volunteers had the pleasure of attending a live Ear Hustle show at Seattle Town Hall. Attendees heard first-hand accounts of what life behind bars looks like and the daily abuses incarcerated people are subjected to. 

The extent of the oppression present in these institutions makes accomplishing meaningful self growth nearly impossible, yet the producers of Ear Hustle have still managed to make a positive impact and experience out of their time behind bars. One of the podcasts inside producers, Tam Steve Nguyen, is a prime example of the personal growth that is possible when time is focused on uplifting and empowering others. Tam and the Ear Hustle team are asking for our help to petition for Tam’s freedom in recognition of all that he has done to better himself and his community during his incarceration. 

Not only is Tam an assistant producer on Ear Hustle, he also serves as a teacher and mentor to his community in his role as a teaching assistant, and helps to organize a group focused on changing prison culture through service, accountability, and rehabilitation. He has also spearheaded programming that promotes community healing for family members of the incarcerated. Tam has had a profoundly positive impact on his direct community in San Quentin as well as a much larger community outside the prison walls. He has used his time behind bars to grow personally and help others, and the potential of his impact post incarceration would only grow.
