Prisoners appreciate free books

More than 2 million people are incarcerated in American prisons today.  In recent years, more and more prison libraries have closed due to space limitations, budget cuts, and increased prison population.  BTP receives nearly 9000 letters per year from prisoners requesting books.  We frequently receive thank you notes like the following.  We are always delighted to receive these notes along with the artwork, stories, and stamps that accompany them.

A reminder that we're all human

Dear People: Thank You. Little occurs that reminds me I am a member of a cognitive, emotional species: your package did.  Not much going on in the Texas Department of Corrections, so a good read is a primo event.  Thank you for reminding me that I'm human and other humans care!   --Jimmy, Texas

Prisoner creates a Peace Studies section

All the books I read are given to our library after I finish them.  I'm creating a peace studies section in our prison library and it's beginning to actually be used. Thank you again for your help.    --Joy, Indiana

Older Native American starts school

To the staff of Books to Prisoners:
Received the books you sent and was really pleased with them. Thank you. I could not wait to get back to my cell. I will tell you a little about myself. I am a mixed breed ('Apache-Cherokee and Scotch') born in 1925 during the great depression. I dropped out of school and went to work with my father to help support our family. All my life I have been what the round eyes have called a stupid redskin, and I resented it.  Now that I am in the twilight of my life, I have gone on and am getting an education. In September I will start my first quarter of college. I catch a lot of ribbing about it, but this is something I want. Even though I will never live to get out of prison, at least I can do something constructive with the time left. Thank you for the books.  They will be put to good use.   --Grey Fox, Ohio

Woman appreciates prisoner rights book

I received the books and prisoner rights literature. Thank you very much. I will be glad to let other women here know about the service. I look forward to reading the women's literature. Just wanted to say thanks!  --Theresa, New York

Man "in the hole" donates stamps

Hello there! I am writing to you folks to let you know that I did receive two books a couple of weeks back and I would like to thank you guys. Also, we only go to to our canteen once a month here in the hole, so I had to wait my turn to purchase some stamps. I know that it ain't much, but I don't have much and I really do want to show my appreciation. So I am enclosing three .32¢ stamps and three .01¢ stamps. I go as I came with my utmost respects to you all."   --Ross, California
